Taking Care of Your Dental Work

Posted .

If you have decided to restore or replace a tooth, you may think that you can slack off on taking care of your smile. The truth is that brushing and flossing are not just for your natural teeth. Plaque, tartar and food debris can build up on your dentures, implants veneers, bond, bridge and crown.  If you fail to care for your dental work, it won’t do much for your smile.

Implants and crowns need healthy gums to do their job. If plaque and tartar accumulate on your teeth and gums, or if you smoke, use drugs, you can develop gum disease which can cause your implants or crown to fail.  Veneers are great for protecting the fronts of your teeth. The backs, however, are still vulnerable to tooth decay. Likewise, if you don’t take care of your teeth, you dental bond won’t hang on for very long. Food debris can get caught in a bridge, and since flossing a bridge can be difficult, you should talk to your dentist about using a floss threader or a water flosser.

Finally, you should brush your teeth for two minutes at a time twice a day and floss once a day.  Additionally, you should see your dentist at least twice a year for your regular cleanings and exams. If you need a tooth replaced or repaired, or if it is just time for your routine visit, our dentists, Dr. Sean Ferguson and Dr. Michael Ferguson, will be happy to see you. If you live in the Concord, North Carolina area and would like to make an appointment at Ferguson & Associates, DDS, call 704-786-8317 today.
