Congratulations on your new crown. With the proper care, a crown can last for seven years or more, although your dentist will continue to check it.
You should not feel any pain with your new crown, but there may be some temporary sensitivity if the tooth still has its nerve. If the crown was set too high on your tooth, you may experience some discomfort when biting or chewing. Let your dentist know about any sensitivity or pain, since the situation can be easily corrected during a visit to the office. If your crown feels loose, contact your dentist for an appoint since bacteria can work its way under the crown and attack the tooth inside.
While the crown protects your tooth, it does not protect your gums. That means that your will still need to brush twice a day for two minutes at a time, and floss before bed. You will also need to see the dentist for your regular appointments, since gum disease from plaque buildup can cause problems for your crown.
Crowns can chip and fall out. You dentist can repair a chipped crown in the office, and if you lose a crown, save it and bring with you to the dentist office. Even though a new crown may have to be made, the old one can be used as a temporary fix.
