Not Treating a Cavity

Posted .

Some people believe that it’s OK to ignore a dental cavity and avoid the dental office. If you could be considered as one of these people, then Dr. Sean Ferguson and our Ferguson & Associates, DDS team are happy to tell you that that is not the case. If you delay treatment, you might need more dental work than just a simple filling. In fact, if you delay treatment, the following might be required:

-Dental crown placement: If the tooth decay is left untreated and it has destroyed the majority of your tooth’s structure, then a dental crown will be needed. This is necessary when most of the tooth is gone and a dental filling cannot help the situation.

-Root canal therapy: If the cavity is not treated, the decay can reach the pulp chamber, which is where the nerve and blood vessels reside. When the pulp becomes irritated and infected, it can cause extreme amounts of pain and it can eventually lead to an abscess. Only a root canal can help in this situation.

-Tooth extraction: If the tooth decay is not treated and the dental crown and root canal will not help the situation, then a tooth extraction is needed. This is the worst case scenario and it’s best to avoid it as much as possible.
